Troubleshooting → Compass on a phone
Compass says it could not read this phone's DNS setting
That is Compass refusing to guess. It reads Android's actual Private DNS setting rather than inferring it, and if it cannot read it, it says unread rather than off.
What is probably going on
Most likely
The manufacturer's build restricts reading that setting. Some Android skins do.
Applies to: android
Check this firstCompass reports the setting as unread rather than as off or automatic.
- Check it yourself: Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS. It should say family.cloudflare-dns.com.
- Nothing is broken if it does — the phone is protected and Compass simply cannot see the setting to confirm it.
Cause 2
It says Automatic, which is not the same as unread. Automatic encrypts DNS and filters nothing.
Applies to: android
Check this firstThe Protect tab names Automatic explicitly.
- Set Private DNS to the provider hostname family.cloudflare-dns.com.
- Compass cannot set this for you — Android has no API that lets an app change Private DNS, so the tab tells you where it is instead of pretending to do it.
What Haven cannot fix here
Stated plainly, because a product that hides its edges is how you end up trusting a surface nobody is covering.
Wanting Compass to just turn Private DNS on.No Android app can. The setting is deliberately reserved to the user, and a product that claimed to set it would be doing something else.
Next door to this
Still stuck?
Two doors, and neither of them is a queue you never hear back from.
Last checked 2026-08. Nothing on this page was written by a model — a made-up menu path is worse than no instruction at all, and this is the page somebody reads when they are already stuck.
